A Message from Maestro Vick

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” ― Victor Hugo

“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart..” ― Pablo Casals

“To sing like this, in the company of other souls, and to make those consonants slip out so easily and in unison, and to make those chords so rich that they bring tears to your eyes. this is transcendence. This is the power that choral singing has that other music can only dream of.” ―Garrison Keillor

Music, and especially singing, plays an exceptional role in the life of every human being. Music makes us happy, music can bring us to tears, music can uplift our spirits, music can annoy and anger us, music can console and give us peace. Great sages through the ages extol the virtues and power of music and song.

Many of us in the choral music field, both singers and conductors, occasionally enjoy “religious and spiritual” experiences through singing, even in rehearsals. Powerful music, whether exciting or thought-provoking, can bring an audience spontaneously to its feet to affirm the personal reaction to those sounds. What a force, what a JOY music is — particularly choral music.

The Greenville Chorale has been bringing to life great music in our community for 63 years. Our MISSION — to promote and celebrate the art of choral music — demands performance at the highest level of excellence significant choral music. Our 2023-2024 season includes a variety of musical styles, from pop songs to classical literature. We reach out to the upstate with a variety of concert venues, from the new concert hall at First Presbyterian Church to First Baptist Church, to Furman concert spaces. The Herring Chamber Ensemble will perform beautiful and meaningful music in a more intimate setting. The full Chorale (150 voices) will join with the Greenville Jazz Collective for an evening of popular and entertaining music from the big band era and Broadway shows. We sing unaccompanied choral music, and we collaborate with upstate professional orchestral musicians and invited high school singers. Our singers come from across the upstate, investing 2-3 hours each Monday evening to prepare for concerts, from August through June. One singer mentions regularly, “I don’t sing because I am happy, I am happy because I sing.”

Our concert success over all these years is because of the combined team effort of dedicated singers, loyal and generous donors, faithful audience members, a strong and effective professional staff, and the love and value we all share for great choral music. The Chorale Family looks forward to seeing YOU at this season’s concert experiences.

Thanks for your support, and the enthusiasm you share for great choral music.

Cheers,
